Writing in the March 2026 issue of HME News, Ray Reynolds — Chair of the International Association of Fire Chiefs’ Home Oxygen Therapy Fire Working Group — argues that with around 1.5 million Americans relying on home oxygen therapy, the fire risk it carries remains one of the most overlooked in home health care.
Reynolds also highlights a 2021 survey by BPR Medical which suggests 59% of installers do not install thermal fuses, despite 95% of them believing they are effective.
He suggests that as more states move to adopt the devices, and momentum grows around a House of Representatives Bill mandating the devices for all Medicare and Medicaid patients, home oxygen installers should work with patients to familiarise themselves with the devices.
